MINISTER in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa will represent the Malaysian government and head to Christchurch today after 17-year-old Mohd Haziq Mohd Tarmizi was confirmed to have died in last week’s terror attack on a New Zealand mosque.

Haziq, who went missing after the Christchurch mosque shootings on Friday, was counted as one of the 50 people killed in the terror assault on the Al-Noor and Linwood mosques.

Mujahid is scheduled to depart at 3.30pm today and will meet Haziq’s family in Christchurch. The minister in charge of religious affairs is also due to conduct funeral prayers, said the prime minister’s office in a statement today.

“Following this very sad news, the minister has requested that all mosques in Malaysia hold funeral prayers for Allahyarham Mohd Haziq after Friday prayers tomorrow,” it said.

Earlier today, the Foreign Ministry also released a statement confirming Haziq’s death and pledging to assist all Malaysians affected by the attack.

Haziq’s father, 42-year-old Mohd Tarmizi Shuib, is one of three Malaysians who suffered injuries during the attack. The other two are Rahimi Ahmad and Mohd Nazril Hisham Omar.

Haziq was with his father and younger brother when a gunman stormed the Al-Noor Mosque and fired at those praying inside. – Bernama, March 21, 2019.
