Emergency declaration will cause panic, says DPM

THE government does not wish to cause panic by declaring a state of emergency in Pasir Gudang, said Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

She said the government will make a decision after holding a meeting on whether to declare an emergency in the area due to toxic waste dumping.

“We will have to hold a meeting first and look into all possible angles to handle this issue.

“We can’t declare an emergency and cause the people to panic. We need to look into addressing and solving the problem immediately and in the long term,” she told reporters in Parliament.

Earlier Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin told the Dewan Rakyat that the government will decide whether to declare a state of emergency in Pasir Gudang area as soon as possible.

“I will convey your suggestions and views to the committee as this is not my decision alone. We will decide on this as soon as possible,” Yeo told Hassan Abdul Karim’s (Pasir Gudang-PH) who suggested for an emergency order for the area starting from today. – March 14, 2019.
