ACTIVIST Marina Mahathir has hit out at Pakatan Harapan leaders Mujahid Yusof Rawa and Wan Saiful Wan Jan for condemning the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community who took part in the Women’s Day march yesterday.
The prime minister’s daughter slammed the duo for only focusing on one matter despite many other demands made during the rally.
“I’m calling you out Wan Saiful and Mujahid Yusof. You are trying to distract from addressing very real women’s issues by focusing on only one of MANY demands at the #WomensMarch. Shame on you! #misogyny #youreadisgrace,” she wrote on Twitter.
The tweet was retweeted for 82 times and received 121 likes.
Both Mujahid and Wan Saiful had not responded to Marina’s tweet despite being tagged.
Mujahid is a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, in charge of Islamic affairs, and a vice-president of Amanah. Wan Saiful meanwhile is a member of Bersatu, a party led by Marina’s father and Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He is also the chairman of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN).
Continuing her tweets against these two leaders, Marina asked if either of them had said anything positive for International Women’s Day.
“Have they even wished us? And to think we women’s groups campaigned and voted for you!!! #misogyny,” she said.
Has either @wansaiful or @mujahidrawa said anything positive for #InternationalWomansDay? Have they even wished us? And to think we women’s groups campaigned and voted for you!!! #misogyny

She then asked the duo if they believe that women should be beaten up.
“Do you believe that women should endure sexual harassment? Do you believe that women n girls should die in childbirth? Do you believe that women shd be paid less than men? #misogyny.”
“I’m really beginning to believe that men really believe that women’s issues are trivial, and that’s why they will find any excuse to NOT respond to demands to address anything that truly affects women. It’s called MISOGYNY!! #Kebencianterhadapperempuan,” she added.
Some Twitter users supported Marina’s sentiment saying that many PH leaders have forgotten what they claim to fight for.
Others disagree with Marina, saying that the LGBT community has no place in modern Malaysia.
Yesterday, Mujahid said participants at the Women’s Day march in Kuala Lumpur should not have used the event to defend LGBT rights.
He said the acts of supporting the LGBT community by those at the march are an abuse of democracy.
He added that even the prime minister had expressed the government’s stand on LGBT rights in Malaysia.
Wan Saiful, meanwhile, said the participation from the LGBT community during the rally was wrong and branded it as a disgrace.
He added that Malaysia should reject such ideology, saying that it could only spark unwanted provocation in the country. – March 10, 2019.
