SISTERS in Islam (SIS) has helped thousands of Muslim women become aware of their rights, the human rights group said in response to PAS’ statement that it does not deserve to be granted a government allocation for its activities.

SIS communications manager Majidah Hashim reminded PAS of the work the group has done for more than 30 years to educate Malay-Muslim women on their rights according to shariah law.

“Before making such statements, it would do PAS good to learn more about the work SIS does and its contributions to Malay-Muslim women in Malaysia,” she said.

“For over three decades, SIS has been instrumental in helping thousands of women gain better awareness of and access to their rights in accordance with shariah law in Malaysia.”

She said that through its work in advocacy and outreach, SIS continues to champion the welfare and potential of the millions of Muslim women in Malaysia.

She also cautioned PAS against exaggerating the amount SIS received from the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry.

“We caution Harakah against exaggerating facts about us, and the intentions of those who support our work. In the spirit of ethical news reporting, we point out that the figure given, RM30k is an exaggeration and that the news agency should do appropriate fact checks before publishing such news,” she said, referring to PAS mouthpiece, Harakah Daily.

She also urged PAS to focus on issues affecting women.

“We would like to ask PAS if they have anything to comment on the issues that the Telenisa report raised, about the increase in polygamous marriages and husbands defaulting on ‘nafkah’ payments,” she said.

Yesterday the deputy women, family and community development minister announced that SIS was the beneficiary of an allocation from the government in support of its activities.

Hannah Yeoh said the funds are from the ministry’s budget.

PAS vice-president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man today objected to the allocation, saying the money should go to groups that are “loyal to Islam and the Malays”. – March 9, 2019.

  • The only "good work" in their vocabulary is championing race and religion for political purposes, even if that creates disharmony in a multi-racial, multi-religious society of Malaysia. And lying to achieve their goals is not a sin!

  • SIS actually your organisation fail to wake up and liberate the Muslim woman to fight for what is righfully theirs. The women folks especially the Muslim women feels proud when the obedient wives club was formed and sadly when child marriage were a major concern not one Woman Minister or even the DPM herself took up the charter to liberate the shackled mind of the muslim women on such hideous act, sadly it was almost viewed that the muslim women folks condone such practises and the excuses of being poor for the family that is in concern cud be true but if there is mass support and true anger shown on such bad practises , it can do wonders. When Perak exco declare means to facilitate polygamy marriage did not see and vociferous outcries from SIS. Are the organisation being held in bondage and ransom by the practises and teaching of being submissive like the OWC. SIS may done a whole lot of good in isolated cases in reference to individual concerns but I think it is time that SIS goes on a bigger role and help to emancipate the Muslim women in learning to be dignified and start challenging the obnoxious Muslim man characteristics in their false beliefs that the woman are born to be submissive to their demands

  • How was this money awarded? The evaluation process must be transparent otherwise PH will become another BN. However, at least we can see that the allocation is public information, which is good.

  • Pas is a destroyer of womens rights so they can subdue more of them and marry children and women and also not pay then their dues when they kick their wives out in favour of another child or woman. This works for their benefit and has little to do with being right or islamic. Sisters on the other hand are helping women who are being destroyed by pas and its members.
