FINANCE Minister Lim Guan Eng has amended his statement describing Umno-PAS unity as a “declaration of war” on non-Malays but MCA president Dr Wee Ka Siong is still demanding a retraction.
Calling on the DAP secretary-general to apologise, Wee said Lim should be held responsible if the statement incites unrest.
“He should be responsible for any incitement by promoting hatred between races and threatening the harmony of the country,” Wee said in a Facebook post last night after Lim’s statement was published by Malaysiakini.
Wee also posted a screenshot of the article, headlined Lim calls Umno-PAS union a declaration of ‘war’ on non-Malays.
However, Malaysiakini has since amended the headline, which now reads “Lim warns Umno-PAS union will target non-Malays”.
An editor’s note at the bottom of the article also states: “Lim corrected his earlier statement which originally used the words ‘declare war on non-Malays’.”
Wee, commenting on Lim’s earlier statement, said the description that Umno-PAS unity is akin to a “declaration of war” will add to the flames of discontent.

He said whether or not one supported Umno and PAS’ decision to work together, it was the two parties’ “right and choice”.
“I wish to remind Guan Eng that PAS and DAP have also worked together before this. They formed the Selangor government for two terms.
“Now, PAS has simply chosen a new partner for political collaboration.”
Lim’s statement in Malaysiakini now said: “The Umno-PAS union started with PAS supporting the BN direct candidate (Ramli Mohd Nor) in the Cameron Highlands by-election and progressed with the Youth wings of Umno and PAS cooperating in the Semenyih by-election.
His statement was in response to news that Umno and PAS have formed technical committees to study ways forward on closer political cooperation.
Barisan Nasional secretary-general Mohamed Nazri Aziz also said in recent days that the BN spirit of multiculturalism ended with Umno and PAS’ decision to work together.
At the same time, MCA and MIC said they will both seek to explore other options outside of BN, stopping short of saying they would leave the coalition. – March 7, 2019.
