AS late as last night, PAS insisted it did not pay Sarawak Report a single sen when quitting its legal suit in London.

But this morning’s shock confirmation by the whistleblower website’s editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown has blown off all denials from the Islamist party.

Hadi’s deputy Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man had said at a ceramah in Semenyih last night the money that would have been spent in continuing the suit could have been better used to help the poor.

“We could have continued our suit but it would have cost four to five million (ringgit), money that could have gotten to a tahfiz or to help the poor. Even if we won, the damages that would be paid to us would not have been that much,” Tuan Ibrahim was quoted as saying.

He also rubbished claims that Hadi had paid any money to settle the civil suit, which was over a 2016 article in Sarawak Report alleging that PAS leaders received RM90 million from Umno before the 14th general election.

Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown has today confirmed that PAS had paid RM1.4 million for both parties to drop a libel suit by the party against the website in London inspite of repeated denials by the Islamists. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, March 1, 2019.

Tuan Ibrahim reiterated the line repeated by other party leaders, that no costs were paid either to PAS from Sarawak Report or vice versa, after both parties agreed to an out-of-court settlement of the suit, which was being heard in England, on February 1.

Tuan Ibrahim also hit out at PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, who has repeated his accusation that PAS paid out RM1.42 million to Rewcastle-Brown.

Sarawak Report, however, has today confirmed Anwar’s claims that PAS paid the portal RM1.42 million for legal bills to settle Hadi’s defamation suit

Hadi sued Rewcastle-Brown over a Sarawak Report article entitled “As Najib denies all over 1MDB, let’s not forget his many other criminal connections” published on August 6, 2016. The funds were purportedly siphoned from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

But on February 1, Hadi had offered Sarawak Report an out-of-court settlement which stipulates that neither party would receive any damages.

The settlement has triggered multiple investigations from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, who are now probing PAS leaders and its donors over whether it received any 1MDB money. – March 1, 2019.
