PAS has dismissed as hearsay PKR president Anwar Ibrahim’s “evidence” that the party paid RM1.4 million to Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown as part of an out-of-court settlement over a libel suit.
The Islamist party said it had documents to back its claims and that it “will reveal everything” in a press conference soon.
“We are confident that documents are stronger than mere words. We will answer based on the documents,” he added.
Takiyuddin said it had proof that PAS did not pay Rewcastle-Brown RM1.4 million, unlike Anwar, who he said was “only speaking based on hearsay”.
Takiyuddin had earlier spent more than four hours being grilled by the graftbusters over his luxury cars and motorcycles.
Yesterday, Anwar had reiterated his earlier claim that PAS paid the Sarawak Report editor to settle its president Abdul Hadi Awang’s suit against her.
Anwar had said he had evidence and dared PAS to prove his claims otherwise.
Takiyuddin, meanwhile, challenged the Port Dickson MP to reveal his evidence to the public.
“He has to show it. In my previous statement, I said that we already handed PAS’ bank statements from January 2015 to December 2018 to the MACC,” he said.
PAS yesterday denied that Hadi paid RM1.4 million to Rewcastle-Brown.
Hadi had sued her in a London court over the whistle-blower’s 2016 article claiming that then prime minister Najib Razak had funnelled RM90 million to top PAS leaders in exchange for support in the 14th general election.
However, the PAS president on February 13 backed down on his legal challenge.
Hadi had said he had agreed to settle the suit with Rewcastle-Brown, without disclosing the settlement deal, saying both sides had agreed to keep the conditions confidential. – February 28, 2019.
