BARISAN Nasional secretary-general Nazri Aziz has given his green light for the youth wings of Umno and PAS to organise a mega rally objecting provocations against Islam and Prophet Muhammad.

However, the former minister urged the organisers to do things according to the law.

“I agree to the idea of the rally but it must have the necessary permit. We must follow the law,” Nazri told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.

He said this in reference to remarks by both Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and PAS Youth head Khalil Abdul Hadi urging Attorney-General Tommy Thomas to take immediate action against those who insult Prophet Muhammad.

They accused the Pakatan Harapan government of being too lenient against people who have insulted Islam.

They gave the example of a Facebook user who was released from police custody despite posting a “rude caricature” of Prophet Muhammad and the prophet’s wife Aisyah.

They urged the authorities to rearrest and charge the 68-year-old man who was released on police bail on Friday.

“We will not hesitate to once again mobilise the people for a peaceful rally in Kuala Lumpur and across the country to express our dissatisfaction if there was found to be any double standard or lackadaisical approach towards a ‘criminal’ who insulted Islam and the Prophet Muhammad SAW.

“His action not only hurt the feelings but also stoked the anger of Muslims in Malaysia.

“In fact, his action clearly constitutes a chargeable offence under Section 298A of the Penal Code that carries a mandatory prison sentence of up to five years,” they said in their statement.

Pahang police chief Mohd Zakaria Ahmad on February 19 said the man was picked up by a team of police officers at his house in Mentakab and handed over to Batu Pahat police where a report had been lodged against him.

He was served with a three-day remand order to facilitate investigations and has since been released on police bail.

Last December, Umno and PAS successfully organised a mega rally to oppose the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Speaking further, Nazri said he too wanted to know the reason behind police’s decision not to charge the Facebook user over his posting.

“I am also curious as to why the police released the suspect after three days,” he said. – February 25, 2019.

  • I used to think this one guy is the light in the darkness that is UMNO. In the end, given enough time, govt, or opposition, they disappoint.
