PRIME Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad gave PAS the impression that he was the victim of a conflict brewing in Pakatan Harapan, said the Islamist party today.
PAS said the PH chairman hinted that there is a conflict or a “clash of titans” among component party leaders over Dr Mahathir’s leadership.
“PAS reiterates that recent developments among PH leaders, either through statements or acts, including what Dr Mahathir himself said, gave the general impression that there was a heavy conflict or a ‘clash of titans’ among PH leaders with regard to his leadership,” said the party.
Dr Mahathir also faces “insubordination”, it said and therefore, should not be blamed for negative perceptions surrounding the pact.
“The onus is on PH parties to explain incidents or speculations on this, which caused confusion and an open secret.”
PAS did not provide details of the problems that Dr Mahathir is supposedly facing in the ruling pact.
Earlier today, Dr Mahathir said he will wait and see if PAS leaders will support him as promised in the event of a vote of no confidence against the prime minister.
“If there is a vote of no confidence, then I will see if PAS will support me or not,” he said, after visiting the Defence Ministry in Jalan Padang Tembak, Kuala Lumpur, today.
Last week, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said party leaders had promised to support Dr Mahathir if there is a no-confidence vote against him in Parliament.
He said PAS’ position in such a situation was among the subjects PAS leaders discussed in a closed-door meeting with Dr Mahathir last Friday.
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim had declined to weigh in on the rumours of a plot brewing in PH to topple Dr Mahathir.
He said it was difficult to verify PAS’ claim as the leaders were allowed to lie to serve their interests.
Anwar said the matter of a plot to oust the PM had not arisen in his communications with Dr Mahathir, who is also PH chairman.
Yesterday, banners appeared in several areas calling for Dr Mahathir to resign and make way for Anwar.
Meanwhile, PAS also said in the statement that its support for Dr Mahathir was in the interest of the country, and alluded that it had nothing to do with ongoing investigations on PAS’ source of funding.
“PAS stresses that any support given to anyone, including the federal government and more specifically the prime minister is on the basis of amar makruf nahi mungkar apart from playing the check and balance role, which is a key element of a healthy democracy,” said the party.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating several PAS top leaders for allegedly receiving RM90 million from Umno before the last general election. – February 21, 2019.
