BERSATU will spread its wings to Sabah, said party chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Dr Mahathir said the move to form a state chapter was not to oppose the Parti Warisan Sabah state government led by Mohd Shafie Apdal, but to complement and strengthen it.
“We are going to Sabah to strengthen the Sabah government led by Shafie. We are from Pakatan Harapan (PH) and PH has accepted Warisan into government.
Bersatu’s decision to go to Sabah comes at a time the Umno state chapter has been greatly diminished by the departure of 21 of its 25 division chiefs in December last year.
Former Umno state liaison chairman Hajiji Noor had said at the time he was in talks with Bersatu leaders to open a Bersatu unit in Sabah.
Shafie today repeated his call for the peninsula-based Bersatu to stay out of Sabah.
Shafie had said last week he hoped Dr Mahathir would abide by the agreement to keep away from the state that was struck up in the run up to the general election.
“I have met Dr Mahathir and told him the best thing is that we already had an arrangement before GE14, and I hope it will continue until beyond the polls,” Shafie had said.
Shafie said the two parties were “brothers” and that Warisan being in Sabah was as good as Bersatu being in Sabah.
Bersatu is an official component of the Pakatan Harapan federal government. Warisan is aligned to Pakatan Harapan. – February 15, 2019.
