LEMBAH Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil, who today attended prayers for S. Sathiswaran on the one-year anniversary of his death at the Seri Pantai People’s Housing Project (PPR) flats in Pantai Dalam, said the police were doing their best to investigate the case and urged the family to be patient. 

Fahmi said he understood the family’s situation and believed justice needed to be served.

“It is a complex and complicated case. I believe the police are trying their best and being professional about this. I think there are some real difficulties in this and they (police) need a watertight case.

“A loss of life is very hard to deal. So, whether it takes one year, 10 years or 100 years, be that as it may, we must find justice for Sathiswaran,” Fahmi told The Malaysian Insight. 

On January 15 last year, Sathiswaran, a pupil at SMK La Salle Brickfields in Kuala Lumpur, was on the ground floor of the flats with his mother, S. Kasthuribai, when a chair flung from the 21st floor of the low-cost flats hit him. He died of head injuries. 

The PKR communications director also said that he was monitoring updates on the case closely. 

“I’m in touch with the police and hope to get some updates from them soon. I want to help them find, at the very least, emotional closure but it is difficult to do that without a conviction,” he said. 

Fahmi added that Sathiswaran’s family was moving to a new unit in the same block, which was given to them for free. 

“(This) is under the Baiti-Jannati scheme, which means when the receive the unit, valued at about RM35,000 to RM40,000, they will not need to pay for anything, except maintenance. That was the commitment made. 

“I wanted them to move earlier, but Kasthuribai requested it be after the first-year prayer. So, we’re fulfilling that,” he said. 

He added that Sathiswaran’s death should not have happened. 

“Sathiswaran’s death was completely avoidable. It shouldn’t have happened at all. That’s why even (giving) the unit is not enough. Justice is the most important thing for the family, and emotional closure. 

“I will continue to look after the family and address this concern but again, it will take time.” 

Yesterday, Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department chief Rusdi Mohd Isa had told The Malaysian Insight that the police had exhausted all avenues trying to find the killer.

“We want closure, the case is still open. We are still looking into it. But there is no update on the case,” he had said. – February 3, 2019.
