PAS will stay in the Selangor government even though Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) has opted out of cooperation with the party, said Selangor commissioner Sallehin Mukhyi today.

“PAS will remain in the Selangor government as it is the mandate given to the party during GE13,” Sallehin told The Malaysian Insight.

PH announced yesterday morning that it would not be working together with PAS in GE14.

Of the four parties in PH, only PKR had wanted to cooperate with PAS, particularly in Selangor, to avoid three-cornered fights.

Selangor Menteri Besar and PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali is among the main advocates for PAS in Selangor.

He, however, did not attend the PH presidential council meeting on Monday. Azmin also skipped his party’s political bureau meeting yesterday.

After the meeting, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the party would work towards strengthening PH for the next election.

Among those in PKR who are against working with PAS are Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli and Selayang MP William Leong.

The issue of whether to work with PAS had caused a split in PKR, with Rafizi calling for a special congress and Leong resigning the party’s political bureau last week.

Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub told The Malaysian Insight that Monday’s decision applied in all the states.

“All four parties (Bersatu, DAP, Amanah and PKR) were present during the meeting and the Selangor government will have to follow the decision,” Salahuddin said after Monday’s meeting.

Asked if Selangor needed to sack PAS exco members, Salahuddin said: “We didn’t discuss that. We only discussed strategies on how to deal with three-cornered fights in GE14.” – August 30, 2017.
