AMANAH president Mohamad Sabu said Barisan Nasional’s victory in the Cameron Highlands by-election would not have been possible without the votes of some 3,500 PAS supporters.
He said Pakatan Harapan’s first by-election defeat since the 14th general election should not be seen as a sign of the people’s dissatisfaction with the ruling coalition as the loss can be attributed to the low turnout of outstation Chinese and Indian voters.
“PAS votes all went to BN, (and) Chinese voters didn’t go back to vote,” the defence minister, popularly known as Mat Sabu, told reporters after an event in Petaling Jaya last night.
“There was a total of 3,500 PAS votes, while Umno’s votes didn’t increase.”
PH had said its fate in the polls would be determined by the turnout of non-Malay outstation voters, and repeatedly pleaded voters to return to cast their ballots in yesterday’s by-election.
However, Chinese- and Indian-majority polling districts registered turnouts of below 50%.
BN’s Ramli Mohd Nor was named the new Cameron Highlands MP and Malaysia’s first Orang Asli lawmaker after polling 12,038 votes against main rival M. Manogaran of PH, who got 8,800, giving the former a 3,238-vote majority.
Pahang Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail yesterday said he recognised PAS’ decision not to field a candidate, and instead, support BN’s campaign efforts, as a key factor in the pact’s victory. – January 27, 2019.
