2018 saw the highest number of people – 164,914 – arrested for drug-related offences, Inspector General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said today.
RM394.32 million worth of drugs were also seized last year, the biggest sum in Malaysia’s history.
“In 20 years since we created the anti narcotics division, last year’s amount was the biggest in history.”
The amount of properties seized in drug raids last year was also RM90 million,” he told reporters today.
Of the total number of people arrested, 155,316 are Malaysians and 9,598 are foreigners.
“We are worried about the amount of synthetic drugs that are being brought into the country.”
“In synthetic drugs, last year we managed to confiscate 4,587.18kg of methamphetamine, 217.13kg of Ketamine, 909.20kg of Eramine 5 pills, 226.11kg of Yaba and 143.66kg of ecstasy.
“For traditional drugs, we seized 1,880.82kg of marijuana and 731.49kg of heroin last year,” Fuzi said.
The high volume of drugs trafficked in Malaysia also continued into the new year, with 6,197 people arrested and drugs with RM1.9 million seized in the first 10 days of 2019 alone.
Fuzi also revealed an even bigger haul of 569kg of methamphetamines with a street value of RM28.47 million in Perak last week. – January 14, 2019.
