JOHOR Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim is ready to let bygones be bygones and work with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the sake of the nation.
Tunku Ismail took to Twitter today to thank Dr Mahathir for visiting his father the Sultan of Johor on Thursday.
“Assalamualaikum @chedetofficial. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for visiting Johor to ‘menghadap’ Ayahanda DYMM Tuanku Sultan.
“I hope we can work together & move forward for the Nation’s betterment. All the best & Wishing you well Sir. Salam Ikhlas, Ismail Ibrahim,” he tweeted.
Dr Mahathir has said that he and the sultan had a frank exchange of views during Thursday’s meeting at Istana Bukit Serene, and that they have agreed to keep communication channels open to prevent misunderstandings in the future.
The two last met more than 20 years ago.
After the meeting, Sultan Ibrahim personally drove the prime minister in a first generation Proton Saga to the Senai airport to take the plane back to Kuala Lumpur.
The car was a gift to Sultan Ibrahim’s father, Sultan Iskandar, from the federal government headed by Dr Mahathir in 1985. Sultan Iskandar was Agong then.

He said this in response to Tunku Ismail, who had urged the Pakatan Harapan government to stop politicising every issue and start governing the country.
“He (TMJ) doesn’t understand the federation. Perhaps he wasn’t born during that time, so he is unaware, but I was born at that time.
“When we formed the federation, it meant the federation governs the whole nation,” Dr Mahathir had said.
Just last month, Tunku Ismail had posted a series of attacks on Twitter apparently targeted at Dr Mahathir over the degazettement of Pulau Kukup as a national park.
Tunku Ismail lashed out at what he called “senile” statements on Pulau Kukup, and while he did not name Dr Mahathir, he appeared to be making references to the prime minister’s comments. – January 12, 2019.
