DR Maszlee Malik says he accepts all criticism, including from veteran journalist A. Kadir Jasin, who said in November that Dr Mahathir Mohamad was unhappy with the education minister’s performance.
Speaking after launching a book by Hua Zong chairman Pheng Yin Huah “Tun M dan Saya”, Maszlee played down talk that Dr Mahathir had complained about his performance.
“I welcome every criticism and advice from Dr Mahathir Mohamad and even from Kadir Jasin.
“These people are veterans in politics. They know the trade and the do’s and don’t's. So, I am willing to learn from the old timers.”
In November, Kadir said the prime minister had told Maszlee to focus on strengthening public schools.
Kadir, who is the communications adviser in the Prime Minister’s department, said in a blog post that Maszlee got a lecture from the 93-year-old leader about his performance.
Another minister who also received a lecture from Dr Mahathir was P. Waytha Moorthy.
Maszlee was at the book launch instead of the prime minister, who could not make it to the event.
In his speech, Maszlee said Dr Mahathir loved books and recalled his first meeting with the leader, where he was advised to read more and sleep less.
“Dr Mahathir is an avid reader. When I met him last year, the first thing I was told is not to stop reading. In his office, there are lots of paperwork and books.
“I asked him how you cope with all of the stress, Tun Mahathir said he has no stress because he reads and tell me not to sleep. So, please ladies and gentlemen, read. Do not stop reading.” – January 5, 2019.
