SYED Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will uphold integrity in the face of resistance from his Bersatu colleagues, and even at the expense of his political career, if need be.

The Bersatu youth chief said he will not bow to pressure from the party’s division chiefs who want him ousted over his stand against political patronage.

“I respect their views. But those are their views. I joined politics to clean it up and will stand by that even if it results in the end of my career,” he told reporters after a visit to the national hockey stadium in Bukit Jalil today.

He has come under attack by the division chiefs over the Youth wing’s refusal to condone a call for government contracts to be awarded to party loyalists.

Since the party annual general meeting on Sunday, when Syed Saddiq openly rebuked the party vice-president Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman for making the call, the Youth chief has been reviled by the party division heads, some of whom have been enraged by his “insolence” and called for his removal.

Rashid had also said in his speech that it would be stupid for the party not to take advantage of its position to win elections, which he said must be won “by hook or by crook”.

The following day, Dr Mahathir said Rashid’s view was his own and that Pakatan Harapan would never return to Barisan Nasional’s way of government, which entailed awarding contracts to unqualified cronies, with the rakyat ultimately paying the price.

Syed Saddiq today said his position was endorsed by the party’s top leadership.

“The top three leaders in Bersatu have come out with stern statements against it. Dr Mahathir yesterday issued a statement against it.

“This morning I had a discussion with our president Muhyiddin Yassin and deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir who agreed with our stand.

“It shows that the leadership wants to end patronage politics in the country.”

Syed Saddiq said he would continue to fight for his country despite being flayed by his colleagues.

“It’s their right to speak up but I will continue to fight for the country’s most important future.” – January 2, 2019.

  • Well done young man! What you lack in experience you are making it up with principles. There could be a heavy price to pay but its worth it rather than compromise with your integrity. Keep it up and hang in there.

  • That's a good stand. All government contracts should be on a open tender system award to qualified contractors to do the job well. Just look at our current public roads and sports facilities.

  • Good! Stand your ground! Eradicate the vile sickening idiots who seek preferential treatment just because they are part of the rule party or government. This is exactly what UMNO did and that eventually led to their demise!
