PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan today extended Christmas greetings, ignoring the party’s Youth chief who warned Muslims against doing so.
The Kota Baru MP wished Malaysians a Merry Christmas, and expressed hope that everyone is able to live in peace and harmony.
“A large number of my classmates at the Universiti Malaya Law Faculty were non-Muslims. We are still friendly to this day, like a family, and we frequently contact each other and meet for reunions.
“Differences in opinion are a blessing in Islam,” he said in a statement.
It was reported that PAS Youth chief Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi said there should be “limits” when respecting other religions, and that posting Christmas greetings on Facebook is an acknowledgment of Christians’ faith, thus, it is haram (forbidden).
“Christians claim God had a child, and this is against our beliefs as Muslims. Muslims must not celebrate Christmas and must not post Christmas greetings on Facebook.
“They (Christians) claim the prophet Isa (Jesus) to be the son of God, and this is ‘syirik’ (idolatry) in Islam,” he was quoted as saying during a lecture in Kuala Terengganu on Sunday night.
Khalil, who is the son of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, was widely panned for the statement.
DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang yesterday said the warning that Muslims cannot celebrate Christmas is an example of the politics of hate and fear propagated by the Islamist party that could destroy Malaysia’s multiculturalism.
“Does PAS want to have a world war of religions, or a peaceful, tolerant and harmonious world based on the tolerance and peaceful coexistence of all the great religions of the world?”
Last week, Federal Territories Mufti Dr Zulkifli Mohamad al-Bakri, on his official website, said Muslims can wish Christians Merry Christmas without jeopardising their own faith. – December 25, 2018.
