MUHAMMAD Adib Mohd Kassim died tonight from injuries sustained when he was attacked in a riot at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple last month.

With Adib’s death, police have reclassified the case as murder.

It is learnt a post mortem has been scheduled. Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said the family of the deceased would be consulted on the matter

Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said the 24-year-old fire and rescue personnel died at 9.41pm at Institut Jantung Negara. She assured his family that the ministry was prepared to aid them through this difficult time.

Adib was reported to have been set upon by rioters, who dragged him out of an emergency services vehicle arriving at the temple in USJ25, Subang Jaya, in the pre-dawn hours of November 27.

He was taken to the hospital by strangers.

The two fire and rescue vehicles deployed to the scene had also come under attack and had retreated to the Subang Jaya fire station.

Fire and Rescue Department director-general Mohamad Hamdan Wahid later said Adib’s colleagues did not realise he was missing until they returned to the station.

In the past week, the firefighter’s condition was reported to be improving. He had been taken off life support and was able to nod his head, said IJN.

However, IJN in a statement yesterday announced that Adib was critically ill due to progressive deterioration of his lungs in the last 24 hours.

The Malay Mail Online reported that Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali had earlier today visited Adib at the hospital. It said the prime minister’s wife arrived about 3pm and left at 3.45pm.

On December 6, police arrested and remanded four men aged between 21 and 24 to assist in investigations into attempted murder, as the case was classified at the time, in connection with the attack on Adib. They have since been released on bail. – December 17, 2018.

  • Very sad news indeed. Hard to believe that he could be so seriously injured if he merely got beaten up by a few men. However, being rammed against another vehicle by a swiftly reversing firetruck would certainly be fatal. It would clear the air if the truth of what actually befell Adib could be told without any attempt to obscure the facts. If it turns out that a gang of ruffians violently assaulted a fireman, no effort should be spared to apprehend his attackers.

  • A very sad day indeed to see a young guy who was trying to help others die needlessly instead. The perpetrators who assaulted him should be made to feel the full brunt of the law. May you Rest In Peace Adib
