THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today confirmed receiving a report concerning Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s involvement in alleged money politics during the party elections in June.
MACC (operations) deputy chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the report was lodged but refused to divulge details on the case.
He said the MACC would begin investigations if the report had merit.
“Yes, we have received a report linking Zahid with money politics,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
Bernama reported that the MACC report was lodged on Friday at the commission’s headquarters in Putrajaya.
Zahid won the president’s post after defeating challengers Khairy Jamaludin and Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah to take over from Najib Razak, who stepped down following Barisan Nasional’s defeat in the 14th general election.
It was reported today that a report had been lodged against Zahid for allegedly bribing delegates to vote for him in the party election four months ago.
According to New Sunday Times, the report included the names of witnesses and evidence, such as images and documents.
Zahid also faces 40 criminal charges of corruption, abuse of power and money laundering. He claimed trial to all the charges.
Zahid is accused of misusing his position as a trustee of family-run foundation to dishonestly use the funds to pay for his expenses.
He is also facing calls from several Umno leaders to step down from his party position following several defections of party leaders.
Khairy has also openly urged the Bagan Datuk MP to relinquish his post. – December 16, 2018.
