KHAIRY Jamaluddin wants Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down following the defection of six party lawmakers and fears that more will follow suit unless there is a change in leadership.

“Step aside, sir. It’s time,” Khairy tweeted today, along with a link to a news report quoting Zahid as saying he will not relinquish his post, but will leave it to party members to vote him out.

Khairy had challenged Zahid for the presidency during the party polls earlier this year, but was defeated.

Zahid had told The New Straits Times last night that he will not entertain calls for him to step down, following the exodus of several Umno lawmakers.

He said his position in Umno could only be decided at the general assembly, which could be held “anytime… whether in 10 days, a month or a year from now”, said the report.

Today’s tweet is Khairy’s second in 24 hours on the growing calls for Zahid to step dpwn, with his first supporting the proposal from Umno’s supreme council and the party’s three wings for the president to relinquish his post.

Khairy said that an emergency election needed to be held to save the party, as the six who announced their departure yesterday brought the total number of lawmakers who have left the party since May 9, to 17.

Larut lawmaker Hamzah Zainuddin, one of the six, warned that more members of parliament will announce their departure if Zahid continues to be president. – December 15, 2018.

  • Khairy is one of the few in umno who still has the respect of Malaysians irrespective of race.
Umno desperately needs a person of his calibre. Whether he can save umno is dependent on his policy & direction for multiracial Malaysia.

    • Respect I'm not sure. He seems to be a chameleon, but precisely because of this he has the potential to remodel UMNO along the lines of what is required in the New Malaysia. Not unlike DSAI in some ways, or at least a certain public perception of both of them.

  • KJ will have a bunch of foolish and short-sighted loyalists to handle. Be prepared for the hard time. Soon, his hair will turn grey... Lol
