A group of silat associations have submitted a memorandum to the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong asking for a ban on discussions of an international anti-discrimination treaty in parliament.

Sahruddin Esa, who leads the secretariat of Gabungan Silat Pertahankan Perlembagaan, said the memorandum urged His Highness to decree that Malaysia’s ratification of International Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) was never to be discussed in parliament.

“We want the King to decree that ICERD will never be raised in parliament,” Sahruddin said after a demonstration by 313 members of the group outside the palace.

He said a palace official received the memorandum.

Sahruddin considered the group’s job done and said they would not join the anti-ICERD rally at Dataran Merdeka.

“We have no connection with the organisers of the rally at Dataran Merdeka. We will do it our way. It is symbolic enough of the majority of Malays who oppose ICERD,” he said.

There are already about 5,000 people at the rally, according to police, although it is only scheduled to start at 2pm.

It is organised by umbrella group of Muslim organisations, Ummah, with Umno and PAS as anchor participants.

It is held even though the government has acceded to their demands not to ratify the treaty.

The government has allowed the street protest to proceed but has warned of action against provocateurs.

PAS and Umno leaders, as well as former prime minister Najib Razak are expected to march and give speeches. – December 8, 2018.
