UMNO deputy president Mohamad Hasan today filed an appeal against an election court ruling which had nullified his Rantau state seat win in the May general election.
The appeal was filed at the Federal Court in Putrajaya, reports Bernama.
On November 16, the election court in Seremban ruled that the former Negri Sembilan menteri besar’s victory was invalid and ordered an immediate by-election for the seat.
Judge Azimah Omar said the returning officer for the area was wrong to stop PKR candidate Dr S. Streram from filing his nomination papers, allowing Mohamad to win the seat uncontested.
Election Commission chairman Azhar Azizan Harun then said a date for the by-election would only be set after the appeal period had passed.
Friday was the deadline for Mohamad to lodge an appeal.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had earlier urged Mohamad not to appeal against the ruling, saying that Rantau was a party fortress and unlikely to fall to Pakatan Harapan in the by-election.
Mohamad first won the Rantau seat in 2004 and has defeated PKR candidates in all elections since. – November 29, 2018.
