Umno takes credit for U-turn on ICERD

UMNO is taking credit over Putrajaya’s U-turn over the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Its president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said the people’s anger pushed Pakatan Harapan to reconsider ratifying the convention.

“The decision to cancel ratifying the convention was made after they considered our anger against the treaty. We have made it clear that we will gather largely this December 8. Our intention is noble to reject the government’s decision to sign ICERD.

“The new government wished to ratify several other conventions, including ICERD, early 2019,” Zahid said today at an Umno-PAS congress ahead of the proposed rally.

On Friday, the cabinet backed down on ICERD.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir said yesterday the cabinet decided against ratifying ICERD because it involves amending the federal constitution for which the new government does not have the numbers now.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad also rejected claims that the government based its decision over fears it will lose Malay support.

“Not at all. The decision was taken because it involves the constitution,” he said.

The Langkawi MP said the PH government did not have a two-thirds majority in Parliament to amend the constitution. – November 25, 2018.
