AUDITOR-GENERAL Madinah Mohamad has confirmed that the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) audit report had been tampered with and altered.
In a statement, Madinah said a paragraph in the original report stating that fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho was present at a meeting of the scandal-plagued fund’s board of directors was removed from the final report, Bernama reports.
She said the former private secretary to former prime minister Najib Razak, Shukry Mohd Salleh, ordered the removal on the excuse that it was sensitive and to avoid the facts from being twisted by the then opposition.
The statement comes amid reports that Najib wanted his involvement and Low’s omitted from the report prepared by former auditor-general Ambrin Buang.
Najib, who was also finance minister, was the chair of 1MDB’s advisory board.
Madinah also said two days after Shukry ordered the removal of the references to Low, Najib ordered the removal of another two paragraphs from the audit report which contained 1MDB’s 2014 financial statement and recommendations for a full investigation into its accounts.
The order was made in the presence of former chief secretary Ali Hamsa and Ambrin.
On March 1, Ali instructed the 1MDB audit team to once again convene at his office to discuss the amended final version of the report with only he and 1MDB chief executive Arul Kanda Kandasamy present.
More amendments were then made during that meeting, said Madinah.
On March 2, the finalised version of the 1MDB audit report was printed and the next day, two copies were handed to Shukry and Ali. On March 4 and 7, Ambrin tabled the final report to the PAC.
“On November 23, 2018, I briefed the cabinet on these amendments to the final audit report of 1MDB before it was finalised and presented to the PAC (Parliamentary Audit Committee) on March 4, 2016,” Madinah said.
She said the cabinet instructed her to come out with an official statement on the matter.
Last month, Ambrin denied reports that anybody had tampered with his report as he had full authority over it. – November 25, 2018.
