UMNO will attend the the rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) on December 8 to show its gratitude to the government for cancelling the ratification of the UN convention.

Party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Umno members will rally in full force at Dataran Merdeka.

“On December 8, according to the plans made by the Umno main committee, we will give our support (at the rally) to say thank you for the government’s commitment to not ratifying ICERD.

“To show our gratitude, we will come in big numbers to the rally,” he said at his meeting with Federal Territories Umno at the Putra World Trade Centre today.

Yesterday the Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement saying Putrajaya will not ratify the convention, and it will continue to defend the federal constitution “which contains the social contract agreed upon by all races during the formation of this nation.”

Zahid today said Umno will join the rally to thank the government for being proactive in taking the step.

He said the person appointed as minister for unity and social well-being should step down if he “divided” the people instead of “uniting” them.

P. Waytha Moorthy is minister in the Prime Minister’s Department who is holds that portfolio.  He had earlier said the federal government is committed on confirming six human rights treaties, including ICERD, in the first quarter of next year. Waytha was also birefly part of Najib Razak’s cabinet.

“I’m not saying names. Datuk Seri Najib had appointed him as deputy minister but he resigned. Now he is the unity minister but he is causing division.

“We do not want him to get fired. But if he can’t carry out his duties as unity minister but instead causing division, please resign. That’s all,” said Zahid.

Meanwhile, on the police plans to question him due to his statements that were deemed offensive, Zahid said he is not afraid to give his statement.

“The deputy inspector general of police said I am the ninth person to be called up. Why should I be scared? I will give my statements.

“I am not challenging them. It’s impossible that I, a former home minister, would not know what I can or cannot say,” added Zahid.

Yesterday, Noor Rashid Ibrahim said Zahid is among several prominent politicians to be questioned.

Zahid had said last Sunday that the Malays will rise in anger if the Pakatan Harapan government ratifies the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). – November 24, 2018.
