EDUCATION Minister Maszlee Malik has been tasked with overhauling the “bad” education system, the Malay Mail Online reports today.
The report said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad revealed this while responding to a question from the floor during high tea with the Malaysian diaspora in Singapore, today. He was asked for his opinion of the Malaysian education system.
“We need to change the curriculum and timetable of what they learn in school.”
Dr Mahathir did not say how or when the system would be reworked, however.
Dr Mahathir was the education minister in 1974 to 1977.
He had previously announced that he would take up the education portfolio again, but backed down following protests that his double positions in the cabinet ran contrary to the Pakatan Harapan manifesto.
He had joked that he wished to take on the second position because many people in Malaysia were “uneducated”.
Maszlee, who was picked instead for the job, is a political greenhorn who joined Bersatu in March.
Prior to that, he was a lecturer and terrorism researcher at the International Islamic University Malaysia. – November 12, 2018.
