Maszlee tasked with overhauling 'bad' education system, says PM

EDUCATION Minister Maszlee Malik has been tasked with overhauling the “bad” education system, the Malay Mail Online reports today.

The report said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad revealed this while responding to a question from the floor during high tea with the Malaysian diaspora in Singapore, today. He was asked for his opinion of the Malaysian education system.

“The current education system is bad. It needs to be revolutionised. What they learn is not what they should learn,” said the prime minister.

“We need to change the curriculum and timetable of what they learn in school.”

Dr Mahathir did not say how or when the system would be reworked, however.

Dr Mahathir was the education minister in 1974 to 1977.

He had previously announced that he would take up the education portfolio again, but backed down following protests that his double positions in the cabinet ran contrary to the Pakatan Harapan manifesto.

He had joked that he wished to take on the second position because many people in Malaysia were “uneducated”.

Maszlee, who was picked instead for the job, is a political greenhorn who joined Bersatu in March.

Prior to that, he was a lecturer and terrorism researcher at the International Islamic University Malaysia. – November 12, 2018.

  • What Dr. M really needs is one who is an expert in Confucianism, not one who knows theological ethics well. He is too detached from reality.

  • I believe Maslee can do it. Its just certain people ( those comments below) with zero or least minimal patience utter such criticisms. After all it takes time to see the output of change. Dont be despair Mazlee.

    • Wrong.!!!! He has not proven it.It takes more than just an academician to take to task. Like the saying goes----- "Anyone can steer a ship but it takes a competent leader of capability to chart the course and steer". If you got it well you got it . If you have none just step aside . No disputes !!!!!!!!!!!!. Again the saying goes " if you can't chew it please pass it along". Do we have to say more ?????????????????

    • Malaysians' sometimes "flawed" thinking can be overcome if we can learn to think in the English language, which we once had for 1O years from 1957 when we were granted independence by Britain who left behind democracy, a good system of administration, and English education from primary, secondary school, right up to university level. Now that was quality education! We would do well to bring that back?..

    • The proponent of Article 153 had foolishly destroyed it! Hard to bring that back again.

    • Since knowledgeable Malaysians (including Ministers/politicians) ensure that their kids receive preferred education in English, let us not be selfish & deny that to the kids of less educated and knowledgeable parents? We can then all think better and learn better in English to advance in the developed world? COME ON, LET US WAKE UP & DO THIS ONE RIGHT THING..

    • ALSO, ENGLISH DOES NOT INFRINGE ARTICLE 153? Laws are not cast in stone, they are open to amendment and repeal with the passage of time & change of circumstances?..
