SUNDAY’S Nothing to Hide 2.0 forum broke out in chaos and violence because Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s response to a question on the Memali incident and deaths more than 30 years ago was unsatisfactory, said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
He was referring to the 1985 incident where some 200 policemen laid siege on a village in Memali, Kedah, where a 400-member Islamic sect was believed to be operating.
In the operation, the group’s leader, Ibrahim Mahmud, who was also a PAS leader, was killed, along with 13 followers and four police officers.
“Everyone is pointing fingers, blaming the other party and forgetting that what sparked the chaos (at the forum) was the explanation on the Memali incident, which was not satisfactory,” Hadi said in a statement posted on party mouthpiece Harakahdaily today.
“PAS was the victim when we were greatly attacked, resulting in one of our leaders, Ustaz Ibrahim Mahmud, and his friends being killed.”
The incident that saw the death of Ibrahim, also known as “Ibrahim Libya”, had occurred during Dr Mahathir’s reign as prime minister.
At Sunday’s forum, Dr Mahathir delivered a speech about links between Prime Minister Najib Razak and 1Malaysia Development Berhad’s losses amounting to billions of dollars.
After his speech, he took questions from the public.
While Dr Mahathir was answering a question on the Memali incident, shoes, followed by flares, were thrown at him, leading to the crowd erupting in chaos and security stepping in.
In his statement today, Hadi thanked the forum attendees who brought up the Memali issue, saying it was important to keep the dark incident alive.
However, he said, those responsible for the incident remained unapologetic.
“There’s no use bringing up the stories of this dark history if there is no repentance and apology when one is wrong, and if one does not make amends by paying what needs to be paid, and replacing what needs to be replaced.”
He said the youths detained over the fracas should not be the only ones held responsible for the violence on Sunday.
“To those who cannot give a satisfactory answer, you should not be angry. Then, others would not be fired up to cause trouble.
“The young people alone should not be blamed. We should also blame the one who caused it all.” – August 15, 2017.
