Don’t link Umno to 1MDB scandal, says Mohamad

UMNO should not be dragged into the 1 Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal as the party has no connection to it, said  Mohamad Hasan.

The Umno deputy president said there will be repeated attempts to drag Umno into the scandal either directly or indirectly.

“I urge all parties to be mature, open and fair to Umno. We are an innocent party and has absolutely no involvement with any 1MDB operations or transactions,” he said in a statement today.

The 1MDB scandal has roiled politics in Malaysia, leading to criminal charges against former prime minister Najib Razak, who was identified by senior Umno man Abdul Rahman Dahalan as the “Malaysian Official 1” mentioned in US Department of Justice (DoJ) court filings .

The former Umno president has been charged with 38 counts of criminal breach of trust, money laundering and misuse of power involving RM2.6 billion allegedly siphoned from 1MDB, which he claimed was a donation from Saudi Arabia, and another RM42 million from a former 1MDB subsidiary, SRC International.

US officials have also unveiled criminal indictments against Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, former Goldman Sachs bankers Tim Leissner and Roger Ng over a conspiracy to launder billions of dollars embezzled from 1MDB and for paying bribes to various Malaysian and Abu Dhabi officials.

 “We personally sympathise with Najib, who must deal with all this. As with any such case, it must be handed to the authorities to handle it legally, in order and constitutionally. I wish him the best. May the truth and justice prevail.

“However, more importantly, all parties must appreciate that Umno has a larger and more important agenda for race, religion and country,” said Mohamad.

He added the party must continue with its responsibility without losing its mandate and focus its task in enriching and empowering Malays and Malaysians in general.

“As long as Umno is unreasonably linked to the 1MDB scandal, it will affect efforts to restore and develop the party.

Mohamad also urged all those who believe in Umno to focus on making the party better again.

 “To the Malays, Umno does not ask for much. Just act rationally and fairly against Umno.

“Give space for the party to continue its journey and its contribution to the nation, religion and country.

“Indeed, Umno has so far placed the Malays and Malaysia fairly at a much better level than before.

“Punishing Umno on an ongoing basis, on the issue that it is not involved in, is a mistake, unfair and absolutely will not benefit the Malays.” – November 3, 2018.

  • UMNO got involved the moment it willingly and purposefully refused to open its eyes to the theft of the rakyats money and the many unconstitutional attempts to prevent enforcement agencies from taking action against its president. All its top brass continued to protect a man who clearly by his own words shows guilt. It is people like Mohd Hassan who cant seem to see that to draw a close on this chapter it must expell najib and all who have supported his actions and unless UMNO is willing to do that UMNO has no moral ground to ask any of us to be fair to it as it has been unfair to all Malaysians the moment it puts its hand into the cookie jar ie public money

  • The Umno Malays still in their ongoing dilemma? Come out of your misery & flawed thinking. Be a bit progressive, emulate the Pakatoon govt concept of including all Malaysians, only then you will really prosper. You had over 6O years in govt to make Malaysia a rich & developed country. Cheating, robbing & raping. Etc, the country is not the way to go? Do come on board & you will be much better off, maybe even rule Malaysia again under BN?..

    Apandi - AG from UMNO who declared Najib is clean
    Zahid - DPM from UMNO who admitted that he met the donor(s)
    Syed Keruak - Committee Member of UMNO who defensed anything on 1MDB against Najib
    Pandikar Amin Mulia - Division head from UMNO Sabah who refused to allow any MP to debate on 1MDB
    Azalina - UMNO Minister who defensed Najib on 1MDB
    All UMNO MPs and State Assemblymen - All support Najib that he is clean.

    Even dogs know what UMNO hasn't done.

  • How to take over as a President of a party if the unwillingness to accept the wrongs and change the party with a sincere appologies offer to the Rakyat. Umno is hopeless and on its way to demise.
