A FORMER al-qaeda member was among five people arrested in a police swoop last week in several states.

The five are suspected of being involved in terrorism, said Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun in a statement this evening.

The ex-al-qaeda member was a 50-year old Egyptian detained on October 13 in Selangor by the Special Branch’s Counter Terrorism department.

“The man from Egypt was an al-qaeda member and had been involved in the Afghan war from 1988 to 1993.

“He also admitted to have met Osama bin Laden. He worked as an executive manager in a company in KL,” Fuzi said.

Fuzi said the man had been jailed in Canada previously for entering the country using fake documents.

“He entered Canada, Azerbaijan and Pakistan using fake documents and he was jailed in Canada.”

Police also arrested a 31-year-old Middle Eastern man at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport for threatening to kill a foreign diplomat. He was detained on October 20.

The third arrest was of a Pakistani man in Perak who was part of the Laskar E-Taiba terror group. He was detained on October 25.

“The Pakistani man had also received military style training from the group,” Fuzi added.

The fourth arrest was of a 32-year-old woman in Gombak who had given funds to Malaysian Islamic State member, Mohamad Wanndy Mohamad Jedi, who died while fighting in Syria in April 2017.

“Prior to his death, Wanndy had received money from this woman.

“She was detained for funding terror activities,” Fuzi said.

The final arrest, Fuzi said, was made on October 26 in Sabah where the police arrested a 40-year-old man.

The man had also funded Wanndy besides transferring money to a Muhammad Fudhail Omar, who was also part of the IS group. – October 31, 2018.
