A LAWMAKER from Perlis is under police investigation for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl, state police chief Noor Mushar Mohd said.
The Malaysian Insight learnt that the lawmaker is also a former minister, but Mushar refused to corroborate the information when asked.
“We received a police report from the victim and her family. Investigation is being done but the information is confidential.
“I can assure that we will not cover up the case no matter who is involved,” Mushar affirmed.
The police report was lodged at about 11.30pm on October 20.
There are three parliament seats in Perlis – Kangar, which is held by Pakatan Harapan, and Arau and Padang Besar, both held by Umno.
The Arau MP is Shahidan Kassim, who is also state Umno liaison chief. The former state menteri besar was also a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, a post he held until the May 9 general election.
The Padang Besar MP is Zahidi Zainul Abidin.
In a new development, sources told The Malaysian Insight that the girl had withdrawn the police report she lodged as the family refused to prolong the matter.
“The girl was not forced to withdraw the report but the family did not want to prolong the issue,” a source said.
According to her report, the girl entered the suspect’s car after she was informed by a man believed to be her teacher that the suspect wanted to see her.
The victim from Arau had been performing with a group called Kumpulan Aukustika on 7 @ DSSK Busker at the Stadium Tuanku Syed Putra.
“She was performing with the group before a man who she referred to as ‘Cikgu Azhar Hassan’ told her that the suspect wanted to see her in his car.
“The girl agreed. Both the suspect and the victim spent 20 minutes in the car where the suspect had offered the girl a chance to perform in Kuala Lumpur. She was offered RM4,000,” another source disclosed.
The secondary school student decided to run out of the car after the senior politician touched her shoulder without her consent.
Before touching her shoulder, he had held the girl’s hand.
“The girl left and run after feeling afraid but we learnt that the man only hold her hand and caressing her shoulder.”
“He did not touch her elsewhere,” the source said.
Mushar meanwhile has been reported as saying the politician has been called in for questioning tomorrow.
He also said the police will continue to investigate the matter although the girl has retracted her report.
“Although the report has been retracted, police are still investigating (the alleged incident) and there are those who have been called in to have their statements recorded,” he was quoted as saying.
