NEGRI Sembilan has revoked awards given to former prime minister Najib Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor.
The revocations are effective immediately, said a statement by state registrar of titles Dr Razali Ab Malik.
He said the decision was made at a special meeting on titles and awards at Istana Besar Seri Menanti today.
This affects the Darjah Seri Utama Negeri Sembilan award, which carries the “Datuk” title, given to Najib in 2005, and the Darjah Seri Paduka Tuanku Ja’afar Yang Amat Terpuji award given to Rosmah in 2006.
Razali, who is also state secretary, said the decision was made to “protect the greatness and respectability of the state’s royal institution”.
Najib is facing 38 charges for criminal breach of trust, abuse of power and money laundering.
Thirty-two of the charges involve funds allegedly from 1Malaysia Development Bhd, of which RM2.6 billion has been claimed to be a donation from Saudi Arabia, and RM42 million from a former 1MDB subsidiary, SRC International Sdn Bhd.
The latest six charges are for criminal breach of trust, and were filed jointly against Najib and former Treasury secretary-general Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah over RM6.63 billion involving government funds.
Rosmah, meanwhile, faces 17 charges, of which 12 are for allegedly depositing some RM7 million in illicit funds into her bank account and the remaining charges for failing to declare income to the Inland Revenue Board. – October 26, 2018.
