THE family of Malaysian Prabu Pathmanathan, whose execution in Singapore remains on schedule at dawn tomorrow, submitted a fresh clemency petition to the country’s president this morning.
Lawyers for Liberty adviser N. Surendran, who is representing the family, said Singaporean authorities have yet to respond to appeals for the execution to be stopped.
Yesterday, de facto law minister Liew Vui Keong also appealed for Prabu’s life to be spared, said Surendran.
“Prabu’s family greatly appreciate and welcome our government’s efforts on behalf of Prabu, and hope that Malaysia will today make all efforts necessary to halt the execution.
“Today, at 8.42am, Prabu’s mother and sister submitted a fresh clemency petition to palace officials. The petition was signed by Prabu’s mother, K. Suguna, father, N. Pathmanathan, and five siblings.
“We once again appeal to the government of Singapore and its president to spare this young Malaysian from the gallows tomorrow,” he said in a statement.
Prabu, 31, was found guilty of trafficking drugs across the Causeway in 2014. He was detained along with another Malaysian, Suthakar Raman, also 31, after Singaporean Immigration officers found 227.82g of heroin in the car Suthakar was driving.
Suthakar is also on death row.
Drug trafficking is punishable by death in Malaysia, but the new Pakatan Harapan government is in the midst of abolishing the death penalty. – October 25, 2018.
