Taxi drivers’ group calls on transport minister to step down

Christopher Rabin

TRANSPORT Minister Anthony Loke should resign as he takes no interest in resolving issues between taxi drivers and e-hailing services, said Malaysian Taxi Union president Kamarudin Hussain.

“We don’t need a minister who has no interest in us in this industry,” he told reporters after meeting officials from the Malaysian Competition Commission today.

“If he cannot respect us, please step down,” he said.

Kamarudin said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had advised Loke to take steps to ensure fair competition between the taxi and ride-hailing companies, but Loke had done nothing.

Several union leaders presented to the MYCC what they said was evidence of unfair practice by Grab, in that the application manipulated the perception of customers to assume taxis were overcharging.

The union claims to represent 25,000 taxi drivers from 150 companies nationwide.

On Sunday, several taxi drivers stomped off after hurling insults at the 93-year-old Dr Mahathir in a dialogue session in Langkawi .

The dialogue was held to address concerns of taxi drivers that their livelihood was threatened by Grab.

At the same event, Dr Mahathir announced that to ensure fair competition, Grab would be required to use vehicles approved by the government and pay insurance and taxes just like the taxis. – October 23, 2018.

  • The association is a disgrace. There are a lot more things that being/already done by Loke compared to the last few Transport ministers. These cabbies need to grow up.

  • I call for taxis to be banned. They are rude and provide substandard service, vehicles are in appalling condition. They cheat tourists and gv malaysia a bad name. They are also a nuisance on the road, stopping whenever and wherever.

  • Some taxis smell like a garbage truck, and their absorbers almost dead, yet their fares are higher than Grab car. Taxis should emulate Grab and compete, not the other way around.
