MCA had no way of knowing funds from 1MDB, says ex-chief

FORMER MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek, who had admitted that MCA received funds from former Barisan Nasional chairman Najib Razak in 2015, said the party had no way of finding the source of the funds, reported Malaysiakini today.

“I already said there was money (given to MCA). But during that time (2013), there was no 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Bhd). (News of) 1MDB had not burst onto the scene yet. (Talk of) 1MDB only emerged in 2014.

“When people give you money… when your father gives you money, will you ask your dad where the money comes from? Did you steal it? Did you borrow it?

“You would just receive it in good faith, don’t you agree? (Even) if the money came from 1MDB, we are just an innocent party. How the heck were we to know the origin of this money?” he was quoted as saying in the report.

Najib had distributed RM470 million to BN parties in the 2013 general election, with RM16.5 million going to MCA.

1MDB, set up in 2009, was aimed at turning Kuala Lumpur into a financial hub and boosting the economy through strategic investments.

The subsidiary of the Finance Ministry began to draw attention after it missed repayment of a RM2 billion loan that was due in December 2014.

It was later discovered that RM2.6 billion of allegedly misappropriated funding had been channelled into Najib’s personal bank account.

On whether MCA should return the money now that the party knows it originated from 1MDB, Chua said his answer would be irrelevant as he had no control over MCA funds.

“That, you have to ask the (current) leadership.” – October 20, 2018.

  • What a dumb minister you are, Chua? If the money was from 1MDB, then it is money laundering and therefore contravening the law. So, if the law comes around asking for it, then you are supposed to return it. Add that to yours and MCA's irrelevancy.

  • Ex-lawmaker and marriage vow breaker now claiming ignorance. As youre well aware, that cannot be used as defence in a court of law. Yet you persist on making such cocky but flawed bullet ridden logic confounding statements. Pouring cement atop freshly buried MCA coffin it seems.
