UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi might have to go on leave from his party duties after being charged with 45 counts of corruption and money laundering, his deputy Mohamad Hassan said today.
Speaking to reporters outside the Kuala Lumpur High Court where Zahid was charged earlier today, Mohamad said a standard operating procedure was set in 2009 requiring high-ranking leaders to go on leave if they face criminal charges in court.
“(The) new SOP states that those charged have to take leave but they can resume their duties after the trial and found not guilty,” said the former Negri Sembilan MB.
“Previously, if you are charged, you get suspended, but in 2009 the new SOP was introduced.”
Mohamad also said this matter will be discussed by the party’s committee before it is brought to the Umno Supreme Council.
““We will have a meeting with the management committee and then we will bring it to the Supreme Council. There a decision will be made.”
He urged grassroots members to remain calm despite several party members, including former president Najib Razak, being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for graft.
“It is important for all of us to remain calm. We have to trust the police, the court and the MACC and I believe that they will carry out this process in a fair manner. That is why Umno must remain calm.
“Umno is not a party for any individual. We have three million members. In order for us to stay strong, we must not be distracted. We have to stay focused.”
Zahid claimed trial to 45 counts of criminal breach of trust, abuse of power and money-laundering involving RM114 million.
Umno supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman had said yesterday that neither Najib nor Zahid would be suspended, as the party believed the action against their former top two leaders were politically motivated. – October 19, 2018.
