‘Datuk Seri’ title spurs me to better serve people, says Rina Harun

Rural Development Minister Rina Harun was awarded the Darjah Gemilang Seri Melaka, which carries the 'Datuk Seri' title, in conjunction with the 80th birthday of Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Malacca Dr Mohd Khalil Yaakob last week. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, October 15, 2018.

IT is up to the individual whether to accept nominations for state awards and medals, said Rural Development Minister Rina Harun.

Rina, who was one of five cabinet members to receive Malacca awards carrying the “Datuk Seri” title last week, said the award encourages her to better serve the people.

“People can give their views and opinions. But what if those who comment are the ones to be bestowed awards? Would they accept or reject them?” she told reporters after the Universiti Kuala Lumpur convocation at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre today.

Rina was awarded the Darjah Gemilang Seri Melaka in conjunction with the 80th birthday of Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Malacca Dr Mohd Khalil Yaakob.

Malaysians have criticised the five ministers for accepting the awards, questioning how much they have truly served the nation after just five months of Pakatan Harapan winning federal power.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng yesterday criticised party leaders who accepted Sabah and Malacca awards carrying the “Datuk” title.

“I don’t want my words to be seen as disrespectful towards any state government, but why should we receive awards during our first year (in office)? We must perform well first,” said the finance minister.

The four DAP leaders who received the awards are Sabah party chairman Stephen Wong, Sabah Youth and Sports Minister Frankie Poon Ming Fung, Malacca party chairman Tey Kok Kiew and Malacca Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Dr Wong Fort Pin. – Bernama, October 15, 2018.

  • Datukship and Tan Sri titles are given out too freely these days by the state governors and sultans, so much so that it has been cheapened to the extent that is now a dime a dozen. The PH government should put a stop to all this nonsense.

  • Bestowing a title on someone who hasnt done much for the people and country is akin to putting the cart before the horse, so to speak. Rina Harun should stop her bullsh*t.

  • Some people make sacrifices in exchange for the great honour of being elected as the people's representative. What is datukship compared with such an honour? Datukship ought to be given and not asked for.

  • Rina....no no no it makes your head and ass grow bigger and you will grow a sense of entitlement and you will want people to call you by your title that you haven't earned. It will make you feel more important than you really are and make you want to sit back and be adored. If you need a title to work harder than the mandate given by the people have given you, then you really really need to step down. We can elect someone who doesn't need the frivelouse title to do the work.

  • 'the award encourages her to better serve the people' - Hmm. And so far, my dear Datuk Seri, how have you "served" the people better? Hardly read anything about your ministry. Btw, I'm glad ppl like Gandhi, ML King, MOther Teresa, YB (ex Sg Siput) Jeyakumar - didn't wait for a title to serve the people better. One wonders the course of humanity would have evolved, if they applied Rina's (oh, sorry! Datuk Seri Rina!) logic as thier life philosophy.

Better still award every Ahmad, Ah Chong and Kupusamy with a title and hoolah the countrymen are so motivated and inspired to serve the Nation. The country will leap frog into a first world Nation within a short span of time. Congratulation you are the Nation's saviour excellent suggestion.

  • What have these hitherto little known datuks done to earn their lofty salutations?. One might even question the intent behind awarding them datukship when it has never been a tradition of the palaces to award datukships to DAP leaders. Going by Rina Harun's logic that a DS title spurs her to work harder for the people, why is our entire cabinet not given the title? And while she is at it, grant DS to all parliamentarians as well so that they can work harder to serve the people.
