IT is up to the individual whether to accept nominations for state awards and medals, said Rural Development Minister Rina Harun.
Rina, who was one of five cabinet members to receive Malacca awards carrying the “Datuk Seri” title last week, said the award encourages her to better serve the people.
“People can give their views and opinions. But what if those who comment are the ones to be bestowed awards? Would they accept or reject them?” she told reporters after the Universiti Kuala Lumpur convocation at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre today.
Rina was awarded the Darjah Gemilang Seri Melaka in conjunction with the 80th birthday of Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Malacca Dr Mohd Khalil Yaakob.
Malaysians have criticised the five ministers for accepting the awards, questioning how much they have truly served the nation after just five months of Pakatan Harapan winning federal power.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng yesterday criticised party leaders who accepted Sabah and Malacca awards carrying the “Datuk” title.
“I don’t want my words to be seen as disrespectful towards any state government, but why should we receive awards during our first year (in office)? We must perform well first,” said the finance minister.
The four DAP leaders who received the awards are Sabah party chairman Stephen Wong, Sabah Youth and Sports Minister Frankie Poon Ming Fung, Malacca party chairman Tey Kok Kiew and Malacca Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Dr Wong Fort Pin. – Bernama, October 15, 2018.
