PRIME Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will campaign for Anwar Ibrahim in the Port Dickson by-election on October 8.
He said he decided to campaign in Port Dickson because of the speculation about his relationship with Anwar.
Beside Dr Mahathir, other Pakatan Harapan ministers are also expected to campaign in Port Dickson on October 8.
“The heads of the component parties and I will be at a function on October 8 for the Port Dickson campaign,” Dr Mahathir said.
By tradition, the prime minister does not campaign in by-elections.
“There are lots of people making all sorts of remarks against me. So I will do that. They are talking about my quarrel with Anwar, and they will say I don’t support him (if I don’t go),” said the 93-year-old.
Dr Mahathir said that although momentum was gathering in the by-election, voters were also tired.
“There is election fatigue at the moment, which is why turnout was poor in the previous three by-elections.”
The Sungai Kandis, Sri Setia, and Balakong by-elections saw record lows in voter turnout, plunging from a high of more than 85% in the May 9 general elections, to an average of around 44%-49%.
Dr Mahathir dismissed suggestions that PH had an unfair advantage over other candidates because ministers had campaigned for Anwar.
“They are ministers. But they are also party people,” said Dr Mahathir.
The prime minister said that Anwar’s appearance at a veterans’ event was not organised by the Defence Ministry.
“Yes, the defence minister (Mohamad Sabu) was there. But he was there as a party member.” – October 5, 2018.
