INJURIES to the head of Cradle Fund CEO Nazrin Hassan that could not have been caused by an exploding handphone were why his elder brother, Dr Malek Hassan, called for a second post-mortem.

Dr Malek, who saw Nazrin’s body after the first post-mortem, said he noticed a wound on the left side of the head that was too big and deep to have been caused by a blunt object like a handphone.

“The injury to Nazrin’s head could only have been caused by a sharp object, as the wound was deep,” Dr Malek told The Malaysian Insight.

“I am a medical doctor, and I have seen dead bodies. I saw his (Nazrin’s) body at the morgue after the first post-mortem.

“I was told that the cause of death was due to an exploding handphone, which then caused a fire that allegedly killed Nazrin.”

The 60-year-old said the family, as Muslims, did not want to delay Nazrin’s burial, and decided to accept the results of the first post-mortem.

It was only after police classified the case as murder did Dr Malek realise his suspicions could be right – that Nazrin was not killed by a fire allegedly caused by an exploding handphone.

It was previously reported that Nazrin suffered injuries to the neck, believed to have been caused by an arrow. Police also found the alleged murder weapon in an archery bag in one of the suspects’ home.

In the murder investigations, police have arrested Nazrin’s 43-year-old widow, who is a senior executive at the Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation, her ex-husband, their two teenage sons, Nazrin’s sister-in-law and her husband. They have been released on bail.

All the suspects are from the widow’s side of the family.

Dr Malek, who has been a doctor for more than 30 years, did not name anyone as suspects, saying he only wants justice for his late brother.

“I am not pointing fingers or accusing anyone. I am only speaking the truth. My brother did not die because of a fire.”

On the injuries sustained by Nazrin, Dr Malek said the head and chest were badly burnt.

Additionally, there was an injury to the top of the head.

“His chest and head were badly burnt. If it were a handphone blast, the head and chest would not be that bad. The head was ‘rentung’ (charred).

“There were also other injuries to the body,” said the doctor, without elaborating.

Dr Malek said he wants a second post-mortem so that the family can find out the truth about how Nazrin was murdered.

“As Muslims, all of us in the family accept what had happened. But we need to know the truth. What was the real motive and cause of death? And why was Nazrin killed?

“People don’t kill people for no reason.”

On Monday, police applied to exhume Nazrin’s remains after Dr Malek asked that a second post-mortem be conducted, citing doubts over the findings of the first autopsy carried out at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Nazrin was found dead after his bedroom at a double-storey terrace house in Mutiara Damansara caught fire on June 14, a day before Hari Raya.

His family previously said his handphone had exploded, causing the blaze. Cradle Fund also issued a statement, saying its CEO died from blast injuries attributed to an exploding handphone that was being charged next to the bed.

Last month, however, Selangor police classified the case as murder after investigators found traces of petrol in the room. – October 4, 2018.
