SOCIAL media users have reacted with disgust after a DAP MP was roughed up while distributing dates to the public at a Ramadan bazaar in Kluang yesterday.

Most were appalled after seeing a video showing a bald man and several others shouting at Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong, and blocking the PH entourage from proceeding with their visit.

“That Malay Muslim is very rude. Maybe his parents never taught him how to respect others,” Twitter user AzizeeHs said in a post via his handle “@azizeegolfzz”.

(Sungguh biadap melayu islam itu  mgkn ibubapa dia x ajar hormat org)

Many were also angry that the group had “tarnished Islam” with their behaviour, of which the video has gone viral online since yesterday evening.

The video, posted in the DAP’s Facebook page had garnered more than 434,000 views as of noon today. More than 7,400 people commented while the video was shared 6,430 times.

Azrul Aswad Abu Bakar wrote on Facebook: “Shameful… Pathetic… These self-proclaimed ‘heroes’ are those people that are ruining the harmony & unity in our country…They are the ones bringing a bad image of Islam to non-Muslims…”

Pak Lah, who tweeted with @nazihalwan”, likened the people in the group to the Islamic State (IS) extremists doing un-Islamic things in the name of religion.

Fadzil Atan‏ (@fadzilatan) said on Twitter that the group was only “shaming Islam itself”.

“Meaningless fast. Hope they regret before they pass away,” another Twitter user Abdullah@Ravi said.

(Puasa tak bermakna . Harap insaf sebelum disembahyangkan)

Netizens also linked the group to the ruling Barisan Nasional’s lynchpin party Umno.

“Umno’s thugs, loss of Malay courtesy, useless fasting,” noor aizan (@aizan_noor) tweeted.

(Samseng umno, hilang adab melayu, rugi nya berpuasa!)

At one point, the rowdy group also got physical and Liew’s spectacles were knocked off his face.

Zainulfaqar Yaacob, who said group in the video behaved more like people without religion, added that people should realise that Umno had failed to control its supporters.

“They are willing to slap the Chinese and insult the Malays in Johor,” he wrote on Facebook.

(Rakyat majmuk perlu sedar Umno tak mampu lagi kawal penyokongnya, sanggup tampar Cina & maki Melayu di Johor.)

“Slapping again in the month of Ramadan? So sad. What kind of culture do we have now?” said Twitter user SSSmaniam‏, who tweeted with the handle “@SSSMsian”.

(Tampar lagi dibulan Ramadan.? Sedih sungguh. Budaya apa yg kita amalkan sekarang?)

Last month, film producer David Teo was slapped by comedian Sulaiman Yassin during a National Transformation 2050 (TN50) event in front of Prime Minister Najib Razak at Seri Perdana.

A day before Ramadan, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s press aide, Zaidi Ahmad was slapped during a demonstration in front of a mosque by a protestor when he asked the protest leader to explain his accusations against the DAP-led Penang administration.

On Liew’s Facebook page, social media users praised the two-term DAP MP for keeping his cool and displaying better morals than the group that assaulted him at the bazaar.

“On behalf of the Muslims who verbally abused YB and your team, I seek apology. What they did has nothing to do with the teachings of Islam, not even 0.000001%. Again, apologies,” Mirzan Majid said in the comment section below Liew’s post on the incident.

(Bagi pihak umat Islam yang mencaci YB dan team, saya pohon jutaan kemaafan. Sesungguhnya, apa yang mereka lakukan itu langsung bukan dari ajaran agama Islam walaupun 0.000001%. Sekali lagi, Minta maaf.)

Another Facebook user Lat Adam congratulated Liew for keeping his cool.

“The people who claimed to be fasting failed to display Islamic characteristics. To me, you are more Islamic than them,” he wrote.

(Tahniah LCT..kerana sabar and being cool..orang yang dikatakan berpuasa menunjukkan ciri-ciri yang langsung tidak menggambarkan keislamannya…to me you are more islamic than them…)

Another Facebook user Faizal Bizz said when people offered something good, one should just accept it.

“Let’s take a lesson from the east coast flood disaster. The opposition sent help but was blocked, but help from the MP who did not bother to visit. This is called stupidity,” he said.

(Kita ambik iktibar kes banjir besar pantai timur..pembakang nk hantar bantuan ke kawasan trjejas banjir,tp dihalang..tp bantuan dari ahli parlimen kawasan tu tak kunjung tiba..ini lah dikatakan BODOH nama nya.)

There were also those who were apologetic for the group that abused Liew and his entourage.

Pat Wan (@matkampong) on Twitter said: “They came when uninvited, but when needed they did not show up. Should be given the boot in GE14.”

(Datang tak diundang… Bila perlu tak pulaknya datang… Patut kena tendang terajang PRU14 nnti.)

Ydnaws A Damas said the opposition was getting desperate in attracting support because of their slanderous attitude, using religion for their political interest.

“This true incident shows us how much the people hate the opposition,” he said.

(#FikirFikirkanlah ya, #KisahBenar ini berlaku untuk memperlihatkan kepada kita betapa bencinya rakyat terhadap pembangkang hari ini.)

Ahmad Sobri Yie accused DAP of “acting” to be nice to attract sympathy so the people would support PH.

“Malays still don’t realise. The ones who stomp on our leaders’ pictures are from which race, whose supporters? They don’t respect the Malays but are trying to attract attention,” he wrote on Facebook.

(Dap tu nk berlakon jah..nk tunjuk baik nk trik simpati agr org mnyokong pkr ,ppbm dn sekutunya yg lain…..tp melayu masih tk sedar…yg memijak gmbr pemimpin kita tu berbangsa apa….dr pnyokong mana….dh tk mnghormati bngsa melayu tp cuba nk trik perhatian umum….). – June 11, 2017.
