KLUANG MP Liew Chin Tong was roughed up while giving out dates at a Ramadan bazaar in Kluang, Johor yesterday evening.

Liew said the incident occurred just before 7pm when he and his staff were at the dry goods section of the bazaar.

“When we entered the section, several traders blocked our path with three tables. They shouted at us to leave the area.

“One of my staff got manhandled and during the scuffle I got hit on the forehead and my glasses fell on the road,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

A video of the incident has gone viral, garnering 2,100 likes, 1,700 comments and 78,000 views.

In the two-minute 28-second video, traders at the bazaar are seen harassing Liew and his staff as they go about distributing dates.

The group got rowdy and started shouting at them to leave. One of those in the crowd identified himself as an imam. He warned the DAP crowd not to talk about Islam.

Liew, who is also DAP’s national education director, lodged a report at the Kluang police station last night. Two other police reports were lodged by others in the party.

This is the second incident where a member of the opposition was manhandled.

Last month a Penang government official was slapped by demonstrators at a protest outside the Simpang Enam mosque.

The group turned up outside the mosque to protest over what they claimed was the state government’s interference in the issuance of fatwas in Penang.

The Penang chief minister’s information officer, Zaidi Ahmad, was slapped when he approached the group to ask them what the issue was. – June 11, 2017.
