RELATIONS between the Kedah and the federal government may finally improve after some three years of “frosty” ties as Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor openly apologised to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Sanusi made the remark in the spirit of Syawal (Hari Raya Aidilfitri) at the Kedah-Madani Aidilfitri celebrations where Anwar was also present together with other cabinet ministers and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

In the past, Sanusi had antagonised the ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders with many allegedly unverified claims and demeaning remarks but last night, Sanusi extended an olive branch by saying such remarks were made in his political capacity.

His apology caught some in the audience by surprise as they were seen whispering and smiling broadly after hearing Sanusi’s remarks to sooth the rift between the two parties.

“As fallible humans, errors and mistakes are inevitable. May this Syawal be the reason for us to turn over a new leaf together, moving forward with pure intent, sincerity, and responsibility,” the PAS vice-president said in his speech.

Sanusi said the interests of the people should precede the eagerness to maintain power, and all political matters should be dealt with within the political arena.

He also hoped the federal government would not sideline the state.

In return, Anwar posted on social media that any differences in opinion should not hinder efforts to strengthen cooperation between the federal and Kedah governments for the benefit and welfare of the people.

“Islam allows us to have differing views on interpretations, approaches, strategies and priorities, but these differences need to be managed with decorum and tact,” he said in a post on Facebook.

He also expressed appreciation to Sanusi and the state government for their full cooperation in organising the Aidilfitri celebration, despite political differences.

During the Aidilfitri gathering, Anwar highlighted Kedah’s significant role in rice production and ensuring food security, but noted that padi farmers continued to face poverty.

“Therefore, I emphasise the importance of federal ministries and agencies working closely with the state government to implement efforts for Kedah’s development, especially in eradicating poverty. This includes efforts to increase farmers’ income through a surge in rice production, which requires an allocation of RM5 billion from the federal government,” he said.

Anwar later left for Penang where he graced the Aidilfitri open house organised by Khalifah Jelutong Association last night.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, will close the three-day northern region Madani-themed roadshow at the Pesta site in Sg Nibong, Penang later today.

Among those expected to be present are Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli, Sanusi and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Anwar will also attend the community feast luncheon at his former constituency of Permatang Pauh in his birth town of Cherok Tokun. – The Vibes, May 5, 2024.
