BUSINESSMAN Mirzan Mahathir, the son of former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is currently under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), as confirmed by the commission today.

The MACC disclosed that Mirzan had been summoned to its headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday, where he was served with a notice for asset declaration.

In an official statement, MACC clarified that it issued Mirzan Mahathir the notice under section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009. This section mandates the declaration of all movable and immovable assets in his possession within a stipulated period of 30 days.

“This asset declaration notice is a continuation of MACC’s investigation into information from the Panama Papers report and his business activities involving the sale and purchase of government-linked companies,” MACC said.

“MACC initiated the investigation in August 2022 as part of its probe into all entities mentioned in the Pandora and Panama Papers reports.

“MACC is examining financial documents and the ownership of assets by the entities listed in the reports.”

It also said 10 witnesses have had their statements recorded as part of its active investigations.

MACC is also investigating former finance minister Daim Zainuddin and his family members over the Pandora and Panama Papers expose. – January 18, 2024.
