WE had some good scones recently at BaD Scones, a café in Damansara Utama. We liked them so much we went back.
“BaD” in the name of the café stands for “buy and donate” – with some profits going to orphanages, old folks’ homes and animal shelters.
The scones were light and fluffy, and weren’t gummy in our mouths. We had a set of one plain and one raisin scone with clotted cream and strawberry jam.
Mention must be made of the fine bone china cups and saucers our tea came in.
It was a bit strange to have a light breakfast at 4pm, but we did. It was a full plate with well-made and light scrambled eggs, two thick slices of fried tomatoes, mushrooms, baked beans and toast.
I liked everything on the plate except for the tomato slices, which tasted raw.
The fish and chips with sea perch fillets are worth ordering. Sea perch is what we know as “siakap” or barramundi. The fish was coated in a thin, crispy batter and the chips were good, sprinkled with fresh herbs.
The dish came with coleslaw and three sauces – ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard, with a bottle of malt vinegar on the side.
I liked the fish with the vinegar and the slightly tart mayonnaise. The perfectly fried chips were delightful, too.
On our second visit, the fish and chips were ordered again. We chose the country pie, which had a chicken filling, and salsa nachos.
My hungry friend scoffed a cinnamon roll, which was nicely sweet, with enough cinnamon in the sticky sauce.
The country pie sat on potato mash drowned in brown sauce, with peas scattered around. The pastry was buttery and crumbled at the touch of a fork.
The sauce was flavourful and we dipped our chips into it as well.
The salsa nachos came with melted cheese and a tub of spicy salsa. We couldn’t stop dipping the chips into the salsa – they made spicy, crackling bites with a touch of tartness.
If savoury meals are not your thing, BaD Scones has a wide range of pastries including cupcakes, financiers, Victorian sandwich cakes, banana cakes, orange pound cakes and cinnamon rolls.
We didn’t expect it but on our second time there, we got 20% off our bill as it was a Monday!
BaD Scones is located at 23, Jalan SS21/34, Damansara Utama (phone: 03-7491 0097). It is open 10am to 8pm daily and closes on Tuesdays. – January 13, 2024.
