3 states flooded again


The flood situation in Perak has improved with all evacuees having gone home, while Kelantan, Terengganu and Selangor have been inundated again. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, December 14, 2023.

KELANTAN, Terengganu and Selangor have again been hit by floods due to continuous heavy rain since yesterday, while the situation in Perak improved, enabling all evacuees to return to their homes.

IN KELANTAN, 13 relief centres were reopened as at 2.30pm to accommodate 427 evacuees from 114 families.

The Disaster Info portal of the Social Welfare Department reported in Kuala Krai, 61 evacuees (14 families) were housed at Chuchuh Puteri A community centre, and 39 (12 families) were sheltering at Madrasah Chuchuh Puteri A.

Other relief centres were Chuchuh Puteri A Mosque housing 42 people, the veterinary office with 47 people, SK Chenulang with 73 people, Madrasah Kampung Sepuluh with 60 people, SK Banggol Guchil with six people, SMK Kuala Krai with 6 people, and SK Sungai Embak with 32 people.

In Tanah Merah, 26 people were evacuated to SK Kelewek, 15 to SK Gual Jedok, 20 to the Padang Kijang community hall, and 97 to Madrasah Wak Seman Kampung Air Batu.

The Public Infobanjir portal showed the levels of Sungai Nal in Kuala Krai, Sungai Kelantan in Kampung Temangan and Sungai Lanas in Air Lanas were at warning points.

IN TERENGGANU, 85 people in Hulu Terengganu were evacuated to the Projek Penyusunan Semula Kampung Felcra Gunung Menerong relief centre.

Terengganu Deputy Education Director Azman Othman @ Abdullah said two schools in Hulu Terengganu were closed due to floods – SK Lubuk Periuk and SK Felda Mengkawang.

“We are quite lucky as today was the last day of school before the term break tomorrow,” he said.

IN SELANGOR, the number of flood evacuees increased to 99 as at 2pm, compared with 75 this morning. All of them were housed at SK Jaya Setia and the Parit Mahang community hall in Kuala Selangor.

The level of Sungai Bernam in Kampung Sungai Selisek was at warning point at 2pm, while Sungai Buloh in Parit Mahang, Sungai Selangor in Rantau Panjang, and Sungai Bernam at SKC bridge were at alert point.

IN PERAK, all 20 evacuees went home. The Masjid Al-Wusta relief centre in Batu 8 was closed at 12pm.

The Meteorological Department has forecast dangerous continuous heavy rain in Kelantan’s Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Baru, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai, as well as Terengganu’s Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu and Kuala Terengganu, until tomorrow. – Bernama, December 14, 2023.
