THE standard operating procedure (SOP) for rare earth element (REE) mining that will be formulated by the government will ensure minimal wastage and safe operations, said Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun.

He also said it would provide revenue to the state government as Negri Sembilan has great potential in developing REE.

Aminuddin said the SOP would resolve REE theft issues in the country.

“The state government is indeed waiting for the SOP. We identified (REE deposits) three years ago, and know of its potential as a source of revenue for the state, but did not announce it to avoid parties taking advantage of it,” he told reporters after attending the state’s National Day celebration in Seremban today.

Media reports quoted Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as saying his ministry will convene a committee chaired by him under the National Minerals Council soon to discuss guidelines and SOP to mine REE. – Bernama, August 31, 2023.
