THE recent death at a police lockup in Kajang has been classified as sudden death, Bukit Aman’s integrity and standards compliance department director Azri Ahmad said.

According to Azri, no injuries was found on the 45-year-old detainee following a post-mortem.

“The inmate’s death has been classified as sudden death,” Azri said in a statement today.

However, Azri said the cause of death of the detainee – the 15th person to die in custody this year – has yet to be ascertained.

“Blood samples have been taken to the laboratory for further analysis.”

Yesterday, Azri said the detainee suffered seizures in the lock-up and died on the way to hospital.

The man had been charged under section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

He was held at the Kajang police station before being sent to the Beranang police station to be remanded.

Just four days ago, a 42-year-old detainee died in police custody in Pahang, the 14th death in custody so far.

Police in a statement said the man died at the centralised lockup in Indera Mahkota on Monday.

The detainee was given medicine for tuberculosis yesterday evening and found unconscious about an hour later.

He was then brought to Kuantan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. – April 15, 2022.
