WHILE super fine does not quite describe the food at Superfine KL, it does have what it takes to recommend it. First of all, the Superfine Burger is what I’m still thinking of, a week after my lunch at this spacious, bright and airy cafe in the Seventeen Mall, Petaling Jaya.

Sandwiched between a sesame brioche bun are double Australian beef patties, with double cheddar cheese melting over them, tomato and lettuce and the chef’s “secret” sauce and tomato chilli relish bringing it all together.

It was one of the best burgers I have had in a while. I liked the sesame brioche too and was happy that the burger did not fall apart although we had it cut into four pieces. This Superfine Burger (RM32) comes with chicken salt fries.

The pork barbacoa tacos caught our eye too on this occasion. The tacos were filled with shredded pork shoulder seasoned, spiced and roasted in banana leaves.

There were colourful garnishes of raw purple cabbage, charred spring onion cream and pico de gallo, a Mexican salsa of chopped tomato, onion and peppers pickled with lime juice, salt and cilantro. The pulled pork was heavy on cumin, which I didn’t mind but the sharply sour salsa somewhat spoilt it.

Then there was the colourful and flavourful Unagi fried rice (RM34). Fragrant jasmine rice is fried with shiitake mushroom paste, Japanese ebikko or shrimp roe, egg and finely sliced four-angled bean, then topped with grilled Japanese eel.

It was a well-fried rice, with crunch and rich bursts of ebikko, not to mention the deliciously creamy and sticky sweet unagi that I have a weakness for.

The chorizo baked beans and Portobello were the best bits of this indulgent full breakfast platter. – The Malaysian Insight pic, April 9, 2022.

On another visit to this Australian-inspired cafe we shared the full breakfast of scrambled kampung eggs, chorizo baked beans, roasted Portobello mushroom, chicken and herbs sausage, streaky bacon, blistered cherry tomatoes and toasted sourdough.

The chorizo baked beans and Portobello were the best bits of this indulgent breakfast platter (RM36). The scrambled eggs were soft and creamy but of course you can also have the eggs poached or fried sunny side up.

The Ottolenghi (RM25) is a meatless breakfast of roasted Portobello on a bed of garlic confit hummus topped with lemon crumbs, pomegranate and toasted sourdough.

Named after famed Israeli-born British chef, restaurateur and food writer Yotam Ottolenghi, it’s a start-up meal that pleases the palate, especially that wonderful garlic confit hummus paired with the juicy Portobello.

The smoked chicken croquettes are excellent bites of thin crispy crust, giving way to a cheesy meaty centre. A mayo dip with sriracha seals the deal. – The Malaysian Insight pic, April 9, 2022.

The smoked chicken croquettes (RM20) were excellent bites of thin crispy crust, giving way to a cheesy meaty centre. A mayo dip with sriracha sealed the deal.

If we have to pick two sandwiches, they would be the Pastrami Reuben and Chef’s Cubanos.

However, their presentations would have been finer without the unruly salad taking up half the space on the plate and almost pushing the sandwich off it. The Chef’s Cubanos (RM28) is outstanding for the Mojo roasted pork shoulder, pork ham, coriander aioli, provolone cheese, gherkins and yellow mustard on toasted sourdough.

Pastrami Reuben (RM29) has slow-cooked smoked Aussie beef brisket, provolone (aged Italian cheese), poached beetroot and sauerkraut on sourdough. The flavour and texture of each ingredient marry well together.
